3 Day Wildlife Forensic Course For Africans

This is a focused training program for both Students and Wildlife Professionals wanting to increase their knowledge and skills in the field of Wildlife Forensics.

These three days are designed to equip Law Enforcement Officials with the necessary skills to secure and manage a crime scene as a First Responder and to gather fragile evidence in accordance with SOPs.

Through these three days you will gain insights into Wildlife Crime, learn basic forensic skills, crime scene documentation and how to present found evidence in a courtroom.

Module 1: Crime Scene Management

The focus of this module is to be able to identify, report, control and manage a Wildlife Crime Scene.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify different crime scenes;

  • Identify ways a crime scene is contaminated;

  • Outline safety precautions on a crime scene;

  • Identify how crime scenes are approached and secured;

  • Explain the process of handling a crime scene;

  • Identify the different role players on crime scenes and their tasks.

Module 2: Crime Scene Management and Evidence Collection

Through investigation, use of photography, and evidence collection you will learn how to properly record and document a Wildlife Crime Scene.

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate how to photograph evidence at crime scenes;

  • Identify what has to be documented on a crime scene;

  • Illustrate a rough sketch of a crime scene;

  • Demonstrate how to process a basic crime scene;

  • Demonstrate how to collect evidence;

  • Explain the chain of evidence

This three day training will include the following:

  • Introduction to Wildlife Crime, Poaching and Illegal Trade;

  • Preservation of a Crime Scene;

  • Forensic Traces (Detection and Collection);

  • Crime Scene Management;

  • Forensic Photography;

    Hands-on Experience Laboratory Training;

    • Human Behaviour at Crime Scenes;

    • Crime Scene Scenario Training;

Location:

The training will be facilitated on a reserve on the West Coast of South Africa.
